4. NETRO - THE ELECTRONIC LEARNING SPACE

4.4.3 The Path - PHASE VI: Who owns the Web?

Theme: Presenting the diversity of texts on the web and challenging the passengers to critically think about web content and authorship in the form of both readers and text producers.

CONTENT KNOWLEDGE:
to raise awareness on the text types on the web and on how to categorise web content. to emphasise the need for a critical approach to all web content

METACOGNITIVE KNOWLEDGE
how critically do you read on the web?
what kind of a web writer are you?

to give short experience on collaborative writing online

This Phase has three sections.

1. Web content is assessed by introducing web continuums and putting them into practice with the help of an on-line poll.
2. Critical reading on the web is practised by a search for the authorship of a web text
3. Group writing task: taking the perspective of a web writer
The web domain task was a success even though the results of the form was quite difficult for the passengers to interpret. However, this kind of thinking process seemed to help the passengers to categorise web content and gave them a metalanguage to work with in the future.

Collaborative writing online was a big challenge for the passengers, yet it forced them to focus on web content from the point of view of a group of writers. To improve this task it would be good to make it accessible for the passengers to use various modes of meaning when building a web page. In this case the authorship needed to be presented only in the textual mode, yet, on the Internet, it is often other modes, that we use when trying to find out the authors/creators of the site, as well as the purpose of the site.
