Vowels

The vowels of English may seem a lot easier to pronounce than some consonants, but you should be careful - they can also be tricky!

  • You can practise your vowels, for example, with the help of How now brown cow? and Headway course books and cassettes in PUHUMO.
  • Peter Ladefoged's Vowels and Consonants: This page contains audio samples and information about English and American vowel sounds, putting vowels and consonants together, and some video clips of making English vowels. In the British and American vowels section you can compare the two sets of vowels and listen to words that include them.
  • Virtual Language Centre: Here you can find information about organs of speech, vowels and consonants. You can also do some revision exercises on the topics.
