How does this module work?
Practical matters
- If
you are doing this module as part of a course or if you
want to receive 0.5-1 credit (1-2 ECTS) from it,
you should contact your teacher about the requirements.
- The
module is designed primarily for independent study. In that case
it's a good idea to think about your needs and what
you want to learn. You can fill out and print a form about your language needs to clarify your goals.
- During
your studies you can keep a learner
log (available on the TILA pages) about your progress.

The module
- The
module starts from the very beginning - the alphabet.
Then we move through isolated sounds, words, word and
sentence stress and various other stages towards intonation
patterns and rhythm.
- If
you already have a good command of the basics, you can skip
these and start with the more demanding exercises. However,
it is a good idea to revise the sounds because the way
you are used to pronouncing them is not necessarily correct.
It can be difficult to change your pronunciation if you have
spoken in a certain way for a long time, but it is possible!
- You
can practise pronunciation without having much theoretical
information, but it might be a good idea to familiarise
yourself with the basics of phonology. This makes the terminology
and theory easier to understand, as they cannot be entirely
avoided. But remember that the most important matters are speaking
and listening!
- Do
not be afraid to exaggerate your intonation and sounds
when you are practising - imitating fluent speakers is very
useful!
- Train
you ear to notice distinctions between different sounds
- careful listening can help you a great deal.
