Minimal pairs

 

 

Minimal pair: There is only one difference between the sounds of two words, but the meaning changes, for example bit/beat

Below are some very useful exercises, especially if you have difficulties with making a distinction between certain sounds.

 

 

 

  • Okanagan University Collage: Here you can find exercises that focus on th, l/r, i/I, s/sh/ch and v/w sounds. You can listen, repeat, do tongue twisters and try various dictation exercises.
  • Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab: This page contains minimal pair exercises that concentrate on r/l, b/v, f/v and s/sh sounds. There are also many listening exercises. Scroll down to find the pronunciation exercises in the Short Listening Exercises section.
