Rhythm and tempo

Speech rhythm is a combination of stress, intonation and tempo. As learners of English sometimes pronounce words and phrases too clearly and slowly, the result doesn't sound very natural. Here are some ideas for practising the right rhythm and tempo.

  • The easiest way is to find a text that you can also hear spoken. For example most course books have them, as well as some transcribed audio cassettes. You can read the text with the reader and try to keep up with the tempo.
  • The Loop Talk programme is a good way to practise rhythm and the right speech tempo. You can use the programme in Language Centre's PUHUMO. Ask for more information about Loop Talk at the Info-desk.
  • Easton English Pronunciation: Here you can find information and exercises on reduction, contraction, silent letters and relaxed pronunciation, among other topics (scroll the page to find the pronunciation activities section).
