Choose one of the following
paths:
4 A) Racism / tolerance
In Bend it like Beckham, a girl from the opposing
football team calls Jess "Paki", after which the
girls break into a fight; and Jess' father tells how he
wasnt admitted into an English cricket team when he
was younger and how others made fun of his turban. In East
is East, Georger Khan does not want his son to marry
a white British woman, and a little boy on the street cries
out nicknames when he sees immigrants. Did you notice
any other occurrences of racism in the film(s) that you
watched? You chould choose this path if you noticed
that some problems in the lives of the immigrants were caused
by issues that have to do with 'race' and 'racism', and
if you want to learn more about those issues and about the
actions taken to promote tolerance at the work place and
in people's everyday lives.

4 B) Religion
In East is East, religion plays
an important role in the Khan family because the children
are brought up between Catholic and Moslim traditions. At
the beginning of the film, the children are seen carrying
a crucifix and a statue of the Virgin Mary and child; yet
the father would like his children to become devoted Moslims:
he sends his sons to Irdu classes and has his youngest son
circumcised. Did you notice any other problems caused
by religion in the film(s) that you watched? You should
choose this path especially if you watched the film East
is East and noticed that some of the problems that the
immigrants faced where caused by religion, if you want to
learn more about Islam, about 'culture clash' caused by
religion and about actions taken to fight against islamophobia
or fundamentalism
