You have chosen to watch the film In
America from the Ireland WebQuest. The Ireland in
the 1930s and 1940s WebQuest deals with Irish history,
Irish immigration for America, and the reasons for emigrating
or for staying behind. N.B. Note that if you are going to complete the WebQuest on Ireland (or if you have already completed it), you cannot choose the same task twice!

Task
In America (2003) tells a story
of a young Irish family moving to New York. Watching the
film will help you understand why so many Irish people emigrated
to the United States. If you want to understand the Irish
context of the film better, you can have a look at the introduction
of the Ireland WebQuest first. Then go to step 4a of the
Ireland WebQuest and follow the task instructions on that
page. Submit your answers to the Britain-WebQuest discussion
area in Moodle, and then continue to step 4 of the Britain
WebQuest.
N.B. In step 4a of the Ireland WebQuest
you are asked to answer questions about the film In America.
Please, add the following questions to the list. Also, when
watching In America, please compare it to the film
that you already watched about Asian immigrants.
- Do the Irish immigrants differ somehow from the majority
of Americans (e.g. looks, behaviour, customs, beliefs
etc.)?
- What kinds of problems do the Irish immigrants face?
- Are there any differences between the immigrant experiences
of Asians in Britain and the Irish in the USA, based
on the films that you watched?
