III B) EAST IS EAST

You have chosen to watch East is East. Before watching the film, browse through (some of ) the following resources that help you study and understand the film.

Task

You will get instructions for watching the film in the face-to-face tutorial at the beginning of the term. While watching, take notes on the plot and the behaviour of the characters of the film.

After watching the film, write an e-mail of about 500 words in English about the following topic: "What if things had happened differently?" Use the e-mail format in the opening and closing of your text (see the links above for help) and address the e-mail to your fictional colleagues. Then follow these practical steps to write the content of the e-mail:

  • Pick one scene from the film that seems essential to the development of the plot (Did some of the scenes or happenings in the film change the course of the plot? If things had gone differently in that scene, would the ending of the film be different?). Watch that scene again, if possible.
  • Think how you would change the scene so that it would affect the course of the plot thereafter.
  • Think how the film would end now.
  • Write the e-mail, in which you describe the alternative scene, and the new ending for the film!

Post the e-mail (e.g. as an attachment file) to the course workspace in Moodle.
