Sample Essay 

Good style in academic writing means that all parts of the writing must add up. Sentences play an important role in creating a smooth, easily readable text. They also function to inform and communicate your point of view to your reader. Successful sentences are effective, clear, varied in length, coherent and controlled. The following points should be considered when evaluating your sentences:

General Points

- avoid wordy phrases and expressions; be concise (use single words instead of phrases)
- express your ideas simply and clearly
- be coherent – your sentences should flow smoothly from one to the next
- be sure your line of reasoning is easy to follow
- do not over-use transitional phrases
- the topics of your sentences should be consistent within paragraphs
- vary the length of your sentences; avoid run-on sentences or having too many short sentences

CHECK POINTS

- are the sentences clear and effective?
- are the sentences well formulated, easy to read, easy to understand?
- do transitions between sentences work well? Are they used correctly?
- are the lengths of sentences varied? Are they too long/short/complex? Are there run-on sentences?
- are all sentences complete sentences?
- are the topics/subjects of sentences consistent?
