Steps for skimming

STEP 1:

FAMILIARIZE yourself with the text.

• WHO are the writers?
• WHERE and WHEN was it published?
• WHAT is the title / topic?
• WHO is the target audience?
• HOW is the text organised?

STEP 2:

Read the introduction & identify the PURPOSE of the study.

STEP 3:

Read the first sentence of each paragraph to find the MAIN POINTS.

STEP 4:

Read the conclusion / last paragraph to review MAIN POINTS and IMPLICATIONS.

STEP 5:

Decide how much you have to read to find the main points. (This depends on the purpose of your reading.)
