- Jack is faced with a difficult decision and he asks
you to help him. What is your advice to Jack? Should he
use the ticket?
In order to help Jack make his decision
you should find out more about Jack, his background, about
Ireland and Limerick in this period, the reasons why he
would want to leave for America, the reasons why he should
stay and about Irish immigration in America. You are in
the position of being able to get to know the circumstances
from different perspectives and to objectively evaluate
the two possibilities -whether to stay or to go. You will
proceed in five stages each of which will give you more
information to help you make up your mind. All five steps
also contain lots of reference material (such as Internet
links and films) about the topic in question. The idea is
that first you learn about the topic by browsing the indicated
web pages, and then you do the writing assignment based
on the information that you learned. Remember to refer to
the sources that you used in your writing assignments! You
do not need to go through all the links because one aim
of this course is that you learn to find relevant information
from the Internet. You can also search for material on your
own, in which case you should note down the exact reference
information of that material. You can also find a list of
additional
resources at the end of this WebQuest, if you want to
know more about the themes and phenomena related to the
quest. In the final stage of the WebQuest you should have
gathered enough information to help Jack make his decision.
MOODLE
When you have familiarised yourself
with the topic in question - by using the reference material
provided on the webpage or by searching for material on
your own- and when you know what type of a text you are
asked to write, write your answer with a word processor
and post it to the course workspace in Moodle
as an attachment file. The course workspace in Moodle is
password-protected: only the students and the tutors of
this course can access the workspace. You will get instructions
on how to access Moodle in the face-to-face tutorial at the beginning of the term.
After
you have posted your answers to the workspace, your tutor
will give you feedback in Moodle.
FINAL REPORT
One aim of this course is that you learn
to study independently and be self-directed. To this end,
after completing both WebQuests, you should write a reflective
report about your working process. You find the instructions
for writing the final report here.
In order to see whether you learn anything new or whether
your opinions change along the way, it might be a good idea
to keep a copy of all your answers with you so that you
can refer to them when writing the final report. You could,
for example, write down all your comments, questions, problems
and ideas in a notebook or in a learner log while doing
the quest.
A FEW TIPS BEFORE STARTING THE
QUEST
Navigating through the pages is easy if you click "Back"
or "Next" at the end of each page. When you are
asked to answer questions or complete other tasks in Moodle,
you can find the link to Moodle also at the end of the page.
Clicking the map in the bottom right-hand corner will take
you to the opening page of this WebQuest.
Now it is time to start the quest. If
you feel that your knowledge about Ireland needs brushing
up, please look at the links below. After that, you are
ready to move on to the first stage! HAVE FUN!
