II ANGELA'S ASHES

After an overview of the historical setting and some examples of people's everyday lives, you probably understand why the ticket seems to present such a tempting opportunity for Jack. However, leaving your home country is not something you do on the spur of the moment and Jack would have to leave on his own, without his family. In addition to the historical facts you would probably like to hear other people's views on the matter. What would other people do? And what have other people, like Jack, done? Watch the film or read the book Angela's Ashes, which tells the story of one individual, representing the circumstances of many other young Irishmen in those days. Hopefully the background information you have gathered will help you to understand the conditions and the setting in the film/book. It might be worthwhile having in mind that the story is based on the actual experiences of Frank McCourt!

Task

Your task is to watch the film Angela's Ashes and write a film review of it. The review should be 1-2 pages and in the review you should provide a summary of the plot and - more importantly - discuss and present your opinions on at least 4-5 of the themes listed below. You will get instructions for watching the film in the face-to-face tutorial at the beginning of the term. Alternatively, you can read the book of the same title and, following the instructions given for the film review, write a book review (you can find the book in Jyväskylä Public Library in English). Please take notes while watching/reading, as you are asked to write about the film content and specific scenes afterwards. Save your film review in Moodle as an attachment file. Please have a look at the different themes you need to discuss in your review and browse some of the links below in advance to form some kind of an idea of the story. In your review, please justify your views by giving examples (particular scenes or lines from the movie etc.) and thus supporting your arguments.

1) the relationship between Frank and his father, Malachy (e.g. possible turning points)
2) some phenomena related to poverty
3) references to the historical setting and the political situation (for example, attitudes towards Britain and Northern Ireland?)
4) religion and the Catholic church
5) school and education (Frank's feelings towards them, what kind of possibilities does he and other children have? etc.)
6) the position of women
7) North America (e.g. how is it described and portrayed)
8) stereotypes or Irish traditions
9) your favourite scene in the film (and reasons for choosing it)

+ any other themes you would like to discuss
