A few tips before starting the WebQuest:
WRITING ASSIGNMENTS & LINKS
The Cultural Diversity in Britain WebQuest
consists of five steps (see the red numbers on the map)
on a path. The WebQuest path follows the story of an imaginative
business person, who has to write reports, memos etc. at
his/her workplace. As a student of this course, you will
follow the story of this business person as you proceed
from step to step, making choices on the path.
In each step, you are asked to do one
writing task. All tasks are different types of writing
assignments. Each step deals with a certain topic, related
to the story of the business person. All five steps also
contain lots of reference material (such as Internet links
and films) about the topic in question. The idea is that
first you learn about the topic by browsing the indicated
web pages, and then you do the writing assignment based
on the information that you learned. Remember to refer to
the sources that you used in your writing assignments! You
do not need to go through all the links because one aim
of this course is that you learn to find relevant information
from the Internet. You can also search for material on your
own, in which case you should note down the exact reference
information of that material. In the feedback form of this
WebQuest, you will be asked to report the best teacher-provided
link and the best link that you found yourself - it could
be a good idea to take notes during the quest.
MOODLE
When you have chosen which task(s) to
do, when you have familiarised yourself with the type of
text that you are asked to write (there are links with information
on this too), and when you have familiarised yourself with
the topic in question - by using the reference material
provided on the webpage or by searching for material on
your own - write your answer with a word processor and post
it to the course workspace in Moodle e.g. as an attachment
file. The course workspace in Moodle is password-protected:
only the students and the tutors of this course can access
that workspace. You will get instructions on how to access Moodle from your tutor in the face-to-face tutorial at the beginning of the term.Your
tutor will also give you feedback on your answers in Moodle.
FINAL REPORT
One aim of this course is that you learn
to study independently and be self-directed. To this end,
after completing both WebQuests, you should to write a reflective
report about your working process. You can find the instructions
for writing the final report here.
In order to see whether your conceptions about ethnicity,
cultural diversity and tolerance change during this Cultural
Diversity in Britain WebQuest, and to see whether you learn
anything new, it could be good idea to keep a copy of all
your answers with you so that you can refer to them when
writing the final report. You could, for example, write
down all your comments / questions / problems / ideas in
a notebook or in a learner log while doing the quest. Example
of a learner log.
WEBSITE
Navigating through the WebQuest pages
is easy if you click "Back" or "Next"
at the end of each page. You can find a link to Moodle at
the bottom of each page. Clicking the map in the bottom
right-hand corner of each page will take you to the opening
page of this WebQuest. You can also come back to this page
at any time to remind yourself of the practical instructions.
And remember that if at any point of the WebQuest you run
into technical problems or have questions about the task
instructions, you can always contact your tutor by e-mail.
