Interview Transcript – Sandra K.

Describe the course in your own words. How would you describe the course?
The course, Academic English Communication 1, was a course you need when you want to learn the basic knowledge of English when you go to university. So you learn the basic grammar, you learn how to talk with professors and how to do a presentation and how to write a little bit in English.

What did you learn on the course?
What I learned in this course is that I learned myself. We had lots of opportunities to go to the Language Centre or go to the Internet and to learn ourselves and to strengthen our weaknesses in the language, and so it was a good opportunity to learn myself. And also to do a presentation, it was a first time that I’ve done that presentation in English, so it was good exercise.

Did you acquire any new learning strategies on the course?
In this course I learned how to work myself, and I learned to do teamwork, so we’ve done lots of group work, and it’s a nicer way to learn in a group than alone.

Where there any new teaching or studying methods, type of assignments, etc. on the course?
What was quite new for me was the self-access task what means that we’ve done a couple of hours of work by ourselves, and we went to the Language Centre or the Internet, and learned ourselves. And also this group work was quite new for me, and the presentation, and the essays, we had to do every two weeks an essay, but with easy topics, so it was not so difficult.

What is your opinion about the pace of the course – was it too fast, too slow or suitable?
In my opinion the course was really good, in some parts it was fast, and in some parts it was not, but in total it was really good to follow.

What is your opinion about the course material?
I liked the course material, because still now I can look in the material and look for example how to do a presentation or how to do a CV, and some basic grammar is in there as well. So it’s quite good to reflect everything.

What do you think about the work load of the course?
In the course, we had of course some things to do, but not too much, we were not overloaded with work. Sometimes we had to do an essay every two weeks, and some exercises but it was quite good to follow, and so it was not too much work.

Did the course meet your expectations?
The course met in some points not my expectations, because when I hear Academic English Communication, I mean it’s like really difficult, really academic, vocabulary and grammar, but it was really the basic things. So that was not my expectation that it was so easy in the basic stuff, but it was ok.

Was the course suitable for your skill level in English?
For me the course level was really good, it was easy for me to follow.

To whom would you recommend this course?
I would recommend this course to students who maybe have problems to follow a lecture or to talk to a professor. And even to students who want to practice presentations and grammar and other things.

What was best on the course? What didn’t you like?
What I really liked on this course is all the group work we’ve done and that we’ve done lots of grammar exercises, and that we’ve done this presentation. And what I didn’t like was really the essays, they were good to try writing, but the topics were not really what I’d like to do in a university.
