SPEAKING SKILLS

Speaking skills in the academic context mean the ability to speak about your discipline/ field of study, active participation in seminars or discussions/ debates (seminar skills) and/or giving presentations on your field of study (presentation skills).

 

Academic seminars and presentations often take the following form:

A. CONTENTS OF YOUR PRESENTATION
1. Introduction
What do you intend to do?
How do you intend to do it?
2. Main body
State your points: information and argument.
3. Conclusion
Summarise
Invite questions
B. DISCUSSION/ QUESTIONS

 

Example: Give a speech about your own field of studies
Discuss the following questions in English:

- What is your major subject?
- What are your minor subjects?
- Where do you study?
- What will you become when you graduate?
- What kind of work can you do?
- What are the studies like?
- What do you need English skills for in your future job?
- And so on...
