Feedback: verbs in the academic register
Verbs are less frequent in the academic register than in others. As you perhaps remember from the previous chapter on word families, verbal structures are often replaced by the noun+of+noun structure, for example sale of goods instead of selling goods.
However, the past participle is much more typical in the academic register. This is natural, considering the tendency towards impersonality of language. The past participle is used for the construction of the passive, which works as a means of hiding the actor of a verb. For example, it is more common to say the research was conducted than I conducted the research, or to use the structure he was supported by well-known figures than to say figures that people know well supported him.
