5. Conclusion

This last part of the MICASE section focuses on concluding the presentation. It pulls together what you have learnt in the previous pages and it wouldn't be a proper conclusion if it didn't contain something completely new.

    In the conclusion you may
  • revisit the thesis statement or elaborated argument of your presentation and prove that you have a strong case
  • leave off with some 'food for thought' and give the audience something to think about
  • welcome questions if you haven't done so yet

Video clip 5: Conclusion

Watch the final part of the presentation. Then read the instructions to the exercises below, watch the clip again and answer the questions.

NOTE: If needed, read the transcript of the presentation.

Exercise A: Transitional devices

If you need the table of transitional devices, click here.

Exercise B: Linking expressions

Watch the clip and listen for the language items that fit the categories below. Write the expressions into the appropriate box.

Table of useful phrases

Exercise C: Drag and drop transitional devices

Drag each transitional device to the function box that best describes its use. You will receive search tips and instant feedback as you go along. Note that some of these transitions may actually serve more functions than are listed here. Go to the corpus and conduct searches for those other meanings.

Exercise D: Drag and drop phrasal verbs

A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb and a preposition or an adverb that together create a new meaning.

Combine each verb with a preposition that you think will form a phrasal verb. Some of the verbs may go with more than just one preposition. This is why the verb will not disappear from the box until matched with all possible prepositions. Again, you will receive feedback on whether or not your choice is correct. Note that some verbs may be ‘red herrings’ in that they cannot be used as phrasal verbs at all.

Well done! You have completed the MICASE section of the library. You are invited to visit the Owl's nest, give your opinion in the Owl Polls and test your corpus knowledge in the corpus quiz.
