The feedback on exercise A: Transitional devices

  1. The transitional devices in clip IV were:

    indeed--> emphasis

    again and again --> time sequence/addition

    moreover--> addition

    to summarize --> summary or conclusion

    on one hand-on the other handr--> contrast

    now--> time sequence

    when--> time sequence

    also--> addition

This clip contained quite a few transitional devices and they varied from one category to the next. In the final parts of the presentation you may use many devices for a number of reasons: you’re revisiting previous statements; adding new information; beginning to summarize and conclude; and arguing for your points by emphasising and contrasting some aspects of the theme. Indeed is used to show emphasis, now indicates time sequence, and also is used to show addition. Then there are some new devices that we haven’t encountered so far. Again and again also indicates time sequence. In this context, however, this device could also express addition, for example when the speaker is talking about some event adding to another. Moreover shows addition, To summarize is self-explaining. The next device is an expression we Finns often have difficulties with: on one hand-on the other hand. In the Finnish language we sometimes say toinen ja toinen but in the English language you always need to have one before you can have the other. When is used to show time sequence.
