XEN0063 WEBQUEST ON CULTURE ( 2 op / ECTS credits)

This is the homepage of the course WebQuest on Culture. WebQuests are problem-solving activities that use material from the Internet. WebQuest on Culture is a self-access course, which means that you will be doing a lot of individual work with a computer - but there are tutors to help you and give you feedback. The course is run twice a year: you can check the starting dates and register for the course in Korppi. For further instructions, please contact Riina Seppälä or Ulla-Maija Bergroth.

This course website contains two WebQuests: Cultural Diversity in Britain and Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s. In both WebQuests you'll be asked to

  • find information on the Internet using the links provided
  • watch at least one film related to the topic
  • share your opinions with other students in online discussions.

The WebQuest on Culture course starts with a face-to-face meeting with the tutors (please check the dates in Korppi). Then you start to do the quest independently. In order to pass this course, you should complete both the Cultural Diversity in Britain and the Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s WebQuests. If you do not want credits, you can also do parts of the WebQuests just for fun. You can do this quest individually, or you can study with a partner or in a group.

  • compiling information about the ethnic communities of Britain,
  • watching the film Bend it like Beckham or East is East,
  • explaining themes or problems that you noticed in the films based on the Internet links provided,
  • small writing tasks and participation in online discussions

Ireland has been an inspiration for numerous songs, films, books and stories. Would you like to know more about the Emerald Isle? Are you interested in history? How about immigration? Would you like to step into the shoes of a young Irishman in 1940s Limerick?

In this WebQuest you will take the role of decision-maker in choosing what happens to our main character, Jack O'Callaghan, whose story you will follow. The WebQuest consists of small tasks such as:

  • participating in online discussions,
  • compiling information about topics related to Irish history and immigration,
  • watching the film or reading the book Angela's Ashes.
  • you can also watch another film as a part of this WebQuest and
  • you have the opportunity to jump to the WebQuest on Cultural Diversity in Britain for a while.

    Start the adventure!
